Meet Postpartum Doula in Denver, Jennifer Dickenson!

Meet postpartum doula in Denver, Jennifer Dickenson! Doulas of Denver is honored to have Jennifer on our team. We recently sat down with her to ask her a few questions! Read her interview, below.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the small town of Pleasanton, California in the San Francisco Bay Area. This has made me spoiled when it comes to weather and a huge San Francisco Giants fan!

What is your favorite part about living in Denver, Colorado?

My favorite part of living in Denver is how close my neighborhood is to everything, how healthy and active the city is, and the view of the Rockies in the distance!

What is your favorite part about being a doula?

Forming a relationship with so many wonderful families! I love helping a new mom (or dad) feel confident and capable in their abilities. Also, getting to be around adorable babies doesn’t hurt!

Why are you a professional postpartum doula?

Although I have no children of my own, I have always been drawn to working with children and their families in some way or another, and have worked in the world of childcare for over a decade. While I enjoy labor doula work, I feel like postpartum work is what I truly want to do. I know from speaking with new parents that when they get home, that is when the real need for extra support begins. I want to focus on postpartum work because I am confident I can be that extra help and comfort a new parent needs during this time of transition.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Some of my favorite things to do are sleep, read, hike or ride my bike, bake, and explore the city!

What is your favorite food?

I could probably eat Greek every single day. I also love Persian and German food, sushi, and chocolate covered strawberries. Not necessarily all together.

Who has inspired you in your life?

Jesus, as he has influenced the way I live day in and day out. My parents, who have taught me the meaning of unconditional love. My sister, for always accepting me and getting my pop culture references. My husband, whom has taught me that hard work and patience will get you far.

Where is one place you would like to visit in the world?

As a woman who studied Modern European Art and History in college, I can’t possible pick just one. As of now Germany, Austria, France, and the Netherlands are highest on my list!

It’s Saturday night at 6:00pm. What are you doing (in a perfect world)?

Either trying a new restaurant and seeing a movie or a show OR at home on the couch eating ice cream sundaes for dinner and watching Gilmore Girl reruns. Depends on my mood!

What is something fascinating about you that many of your clients would be surprised to find out?

I’m quite rare! I’m left handed (10% of the population), have green eyes (2% of population), and am an O negative blood type (7% of population).
