Allow us to introduce you to Skylar VanSteemburg, labor doula in Denver, Colorado! Doulas of Denver is honored to have Skylar on our team. We recently sat down with her to ask her a few questions! Read her interview, below.

What is your favorite part about living in Denver, Colorado?

I love the sunshine and the open, laid-back feel of the city. I also love being so close to the mountains!

What is your favorite part about being a doula?

Seeing the look on a mom's face the first time she holds her baby.

Why are you a professional labor doula?

I am completely fascinated by the entire process of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. I love learning about what the human body can do and seeing how strong and empowered moms and families are throughout the entire experience. I am a birth doula because nothing thrills and humbles me more than supporting a mom through her labor and delivery.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love to cook and I am a total film fanatic. My perfect night is to make a delicious meal and then head to the movie theatre (M&M's mixed inside popcorn is a fantastic snack combination). I also like to spend my time crafting; I sew, make jewelry, and repurpose old housewares.

What is your favorite food?

Curry! Red, green, yellow -- the spicier the better.

Who has inspired you in your life?

My family is incredibly close-knit and supportive. My parents have always encouraged me to follow my own path, have taught me to think before I act, and have instilled in me kindness and patience. I am inspired by them every day.

Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. Always chocolate.

Yoga or pilates?

Yoga. I actually completed my 200 hour yoga teacher certification in January of 2012.

Where is one place you would like to visit in the world?

I studied abroad in Southeast Asia where I bounced around between Thailand and Cambodia. I never made it to Vietnam and I'd really like to go back someday!

What is something fascinating about you that many of your clients would be surprised to find out?

I moved to Colorado on a whim with my best friend. I packed up my apartment in Boston, got in the car, and landed in Denver. I had no job and no place to live, but it was an amazing adventure and everything fell into place when I arrived. It was one of the scariest things I've ever done but it has made all the difference in my life!
